Abraham, who was called “the Friend,” was found faithful because he became obedient to the words of God.
Through obedience he went out from his land, from his relatives, and from his father's house, so that by leaving a small land, a weak family, and a little household he might inherit the promises of God. For God says to him:
“Go out from your land, from your relatives, and from your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and will bless you and make your name great, and you will be blessed. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you, and in you all the tribes of the earth will be blessed.”
And again, when he had separated from Lot, God said to him: “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are now toward the north and the south, the east and the west, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.
And I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your offspring also can be counted.”
And again he says: “God led Abraham outside and said to him, ‘Look up to heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. So shall your offspring be.’ And Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
Because of faith and hospitality a son was given to him in his old age, and through obedience he offered him as a sacrifice to God on the mountain that God showed him.
