There was one of the holy men named Philagrius, who lived in the desert near Jerusalem and worked very hard to earn his bread. Once, while he was standing in the marketplace selling his handiwork, someone dropped a purse containing a thousand nummi. The elder found it and stayed in that place, saying, “The one who lost it will surely come.” Soon the owner came weeping. The elder took him aside and returned it to him. The man held on to him, wanting to give him part of the money, but the elder refused. Then the man began to shout, “Come, see what the man of God has done!” But the elder secretly fled and left the city so that he would not receive praise and glory.
