Abba Mius said, “Obedience is given in return for obedience. If someone obeys God, God obeys him.”
Abba Mius also spoke of a certain elder who lived in Scetis. He had once been a slave and was very discerning. Every year he went to Alexandria, bringing his wages to his masters. They met him and bowed before him. The elder put water into a basin and brought it so that he might wash his masters. They said to him, “No, Father; do not burden us.” He replied, “I acknowledge that I am your servant, and I thank you for allowing me to be free to serve God. But I in turn wash you, and I ask you to accept these wages of mine.”
They resisted and would not accept them. So he said, “If you will not accept them, I will stay here serving you.” Out of reverence for him they allowed him to do what he wished. Then they sent him away with many provisions and much honor so that he could give alms on their behalf. Because of this he became renowned and beloved in Scetis.
A soldier asked Abba Mius whether God receives repentance. After teaching him at length, the elder said, “Tell me: if your cloak is torn, do you throw it away?” The soldier replied, “No. I mend it and use it again.” The elder said, “If you spare your cloak, will God not spare His own creature?”
