They told this about Abba Apphy, bishop of Oxyrhynchus. When he was a monk, he practiced many severe ascetic disciplines. After he became a bishop, he wanted to practice the same severity in the world, but he could not. He threw himself down before God and said, “Has grace perhaps departed from me because of the episcopate?” It was revealed to him, “No. Then it was the desert, and because there was no one there, God helped you. Now it is the world, and people help you.”
