Abba Hyperechius said, “As a lion is terrifying to wild asses, so a proven monk is terrifying to thoughts of desire.”
Abba Hyperechius also said, “Fasting is a bridle for a monk against sin. Whoever throws it away is found to be like a horse raging after females.”
He also said, “Whoever does not restrain his tongue in a time of anger will not restrain his passions either.”
He also said, “It is good to eat meat and drink wine, and not to eat the flesh of the brothers through slander.”
He also said, “Through whispering, the serpent drove Eve out of paradise. The one who slanders his neighbor will be like him, for he destroys the soul of the one who listens and does not preserve his own.”
He also said, “The treasure of a monk is voluntary poverty. Store up your treasure in heaven, brother, for there are endless ages of rest there.”
He also said, “Let your thought always be fixed on the kingdom of heaven, and soon you will receive it as an inheritance.”
He also said, “The precious ornament of a monk is obedience. Whoever possesses it will be heard by God and will stand with confidence beside the Crucified, for the Lord who was crucified became obedient unto death.”
