Sayings of the Desert Fathers: Alphabetical Collection

The Alphabetical Collection gathers short sayings, dialogues, and stories associated with the early desert ascetics, including St Anthony the Great, Abba Arsenius, St Macarius the Great, Abba Moses, Abba Poemen, Amma Syncletica, and many others. Rather than presenting a continuous treatise, it preserves concentrated words of spiritual counsel and memorable scenes from monastic life. Orthodox Christians have continued to receive these sayings as practical guides to repentance, humility, prayer, discernment, love of neighbor, and perseverance in Christ.

The sayings preserve traditions about monks and holy women of the fourth and fifth centuries, especially the Egyptian desert communities, and were transmitted orally and in smaller written groupings before larger collections took shape. The Greek Alphabetical Collection is commonly dated to the late fifth or early sixth century. It arranges material by the names of the ascetics rather than by topic, while related forms of the Apophthegmata circulated in systematic and other ancient collections and were translated into several languages, giving the Desert Fathers a lasting influence on Christian monastic spirituality.

This edition presents the collection’s prologue as paratext, followed by 948 named sayings and narratives arranged in 24 Greek-letter divisions from Alpha to Omega and grouped under 130 named ascetics. Some entries are one-sentence maxims; others are extended dialogues, teachings, or stories of temptation, hospitality, repentance, prayer, obedience, and discernment. The largest group is devoted to Abba Poemen, while major sections also preserve sayings of St Anthony, Abba Arsenius, St Macarius, Abba Moses, Abba Sisoes, Amma Syncletica, and many lesser-known elders.
