The Lord also says, “No servant can serve two masters.” If we want to serve both God and Mammon, it is of no benefit to us.
For “what benefit is it if someone gains the whole world but forfeits their soul?”
This present age and the age to come are two enemies.
This age speaks of adultery, corruption, love of money, and deceit, while the age to come renounces these things.
So we cannot be friends of both. We must renounce this age and associate with the age to come.
We think it is better to hate the things here, because they are small, short-lived, and corruptible, and to love the things there—the good things that are incorruptible.
For if we do the will of Christ, we will find rest. But if not, nothing will rescue us from eternal punishment if we disobey His commandments.
Scripture also says in Ezekiel that “if Noah, Job, and Daniel arise, they will not rescue their children from captivity.”
If even such righteous men cannot rescue their children by their own righteousness, with what confidence will we enter the kingdom of God if we do not keep our baptism pure and undefiled? And who will be our advocate if we are not found to have holy and righteous works?
