When you hear expressions of the prophets spoken as though from a particular person, do not suppose that they are spoken by the inspired persons themselves, but by the divine Logos who moves them. Sometimes he speaks as one announcing beforehand what is going to happen; sometimes he speaks as from the person of God, the Lord of all and Father; sometimes as from the person of Christ; and sometimes as from the person of peoples answering the Lord or his Father. You can see the same thing in your own writers: one person composes the whole work while introducing different persons as speakers.
The Jews, who possess the books of the prophets, did not understand this. Therefore they did not recognize Christ even when he came; instead, they hate us who say that he has come and who demonstrate that, just as had been proclaimed beforehand, he was crucified by them.
