When you hear that we expect a kingdom, you assume without examination that we mean a human one, although we speak of the kingdom with God. This is evident from the fact that, when examined by you, we confess that we are Christians even though we know death is the penalty for whoever confesses it. If we expected a human kingdom, we would deny it so as not to be killed and would try to remain hidden so that we might obtain what we expect. But because our hopes are not fixed on the present, we do not care when people kill us, since death is a debt that in any case must be paid.
