The possibility of resurrection

To anyone who reflects on it, what could seem more unbelievable than this: if we did not exist in bodies and someone said that from a tiny drop of human seed bones, sinews, and flesh could be formed into the shape we see? Let us put it as a hypothetical case. Suppose you were not what you now are and had not come from such origins, and someone showed you human seed and a painted image, confidently claiming that from such a thing a being like this could come to exist. Would you believe it before you had seen it happen? No one would dare say that you would. In the same way, because you have not yet seen a dead person rise, unbelief now holds you. But just as at first you would not have believed that people like us could come from a tiny drop, and yet you now see it happen, so also reason that human bodies, after being dissolved and scattered into the earth like seeds, can at God’s appointed time rise by his command and put on incorruption. We cannot say what kind of power worthy of God is imagined by those who claim that everything simply returns to that from which it came and that not even God can do anything beyond this. But we do see this: they would never have believed that beings such as themselves, and the whole world as they see it, could have come to be from the materials from which they came. We have learned that it is better to believe even things impossible to our own nature and to human beings than to disbelieve like the rest, because we know that our teacher Jesus Christ said, “What is impossible with human beings is possible with God.” And he said, “Do not fear those who kill you and after that can do nothing more; fear the one who after death can cast both soul and body into Gehenna.” Gehenna is the place where those who have lived unjustly and do not believe that the things God taught through Christ will happen are going to be punished.
