But I think that the Spirit first calls those who enter the struggle with their whole heart and prepare themselves to endure every contest of the adversary until they conquer him. The Spirit helps them in everything with gentleness, so that the works of repentance may be impressed upon them. He sets boundaries for them, giving them a pattern of repentance in body and soul, until He teaches them how to turn to God their own Creator. He also constrains both soul and body, so that both may be sanctified and both may inherit together: the body through frequent fasts and vigils; the soul through spiritual vigilance and diligence, and through the services it performs by means of the body. One must strive for this in every bodily work.
