What do you say? Have these words persuaded you? Have we won? Or must we use still stronger words to persuade you?
Yes—by the Trinity itself, which we and you alike proclaim; by our common hope; and by the unity of this people—grant me this favor. Send us away with your prayers. Let this be the proclamation that crowns my contest. Give me my certificate of release, as emperors give one to soldiers. If you wish, give it with a favorable testimony, so that I may carry away that honor too. If not, do as you please. It will make no difference to me until God sees how our affairs stand.
Whom, then, shall we bring in to take my place? The Lord will provide Himself a shepherd to lead you, just as He once provided a sheep for the burnt offering. I ask only one thing: let him be someone people envy rather than pity. Let him not be someone who gives in to everyone about everything, but someone who knows when to oppose people for the sake of what is better. The first may be more pleasant here; the second far more beneficial there.
So prepare your farewell speeches for us, and I will give you my farewell address.
