In response to this, let no Moabite or Ammonite be allowed even to enter the Church of God. By these I mean dialectical and meddlesome arguments that pry into divine begetting and the inexpressible procession and boldly rise up against the Godhead. They act as though realities beyond reason must either be accessible to them alone or else not exist at all because they themselves have failed to grasp them.

We, however, will follow the divine Scriptures and resolve the stumbling blocks in them for those whose sight is dim. In this way we will hold fast to salvation, daring anything before we dare to act presumptuously against God.

As for the scriptural testimonies, we will leave them to others. They have already been set out many times by many writers, and by us as well with no little care. Besides, at least for me, it would be deeply embarrassing at this point to start assembling proofs for what has long been believed. It is hardly the best order to teach first and learn afterward—not only in divine matters of such magnitude, but even in small and insignificant things. Nor is this the occasion to untangle and explain the difficulties that arise from Scripture. That requires fuller and more extensive study than the present subject allows.

So this, in summary, is our teaching. I have gone through these points not to fight our opponents. We have already fought that battle many times, even if imperfectly. I have done so to show you the character of my teaching, so that you can judge whether I am not fighting at your side—against the same errors and in defense of the same truths.
