Voices of the Fathers Modern Translation
5.1

The way of death is this: First of all, it is evil and full of cursing—murders, adulteries, lusts, sexual immoralities, thefts, idolatries, acts of magic, sorceries, robberies, false testimonies, hypocrisies, double-heartedness, deceit, arrogance, malice, self-will, greed, obscene speech, jealousy, insolence, haughtiness, and boastfulness.

5.2

Those on this way persecute the good, hate truth, love falsehood, do not know the reward of righteousness, and do not cling to what is good or to just judgment. They stay awake not for good but for evil. Gentleness and patience are far from them. They love worthless things and pursue recompense. They show no mercy to the poor, do not labor on behalf of the oppressed, and do not know the one who made them. They murder children, destroy what God has formed, turn away the needy, oppress the afflicted, advocate for the rich, and judge the poor lawlessly. They are utterly sinful. Children, may you be delivered from all these things.
