But thanks be to God, for he did not prevail against them all. The most noble Germanicus gave courage to those who were afraid through the endurance he showed, and he fought the wild beasts with distinction. When the proconsul tried to persuade him and told him to take pity on his youth, he forcibly drew the beast toward himself, desiring to be delivered more quickly from their unjust and lawless way of life.
Because of this, the entire crowd, amazed at the courage of the God-loving and God-fearing Christian people, shouted, “Away with the atheists! Search for Polycarp!”
