Life and significance
A theologian who taught through poetry
Ephrem was formed in the Christian community of Nisibis and later served the Church in Edessa. Remembered especially as a teacher of repentance, he instructed through sermons, biblical commentary, prayers, and richly patterned Syriac hymns.
His poetry defended the faith while inviting hearers into humility, fasting, mercy, and wonder before the mysteries of Christ. His writings entered the worship and spiritual reading of many Orthodox traditions, and his Lenten prayer remains among his best-known works.
