The Jews, then, insofar as they abstain from the worship described above, are right to think that they should revere the one God of all and regard him as Master. But insofar as they offer him worship in the same manner as those already mentioned, they are greatly mistaken.
For if the Greeks show their foolishness by offering such things to objects that are insensible and deaf, then the Jews, thinking that they present them to God as though he needed them, should surely regard this as folly rather than piety.
For the one who made heaven and earth and everything in them, and who supplies all of us with what we need, could himself have no need of any of the things that he supplies to those who imagine they are giving them to him.
Those who think they offer sacrifices to him with blood and fat and whole burnt offerings, and that by these honors they show him reverence, seem to me no different from those who display the same devotion toward deaf objects: the one group offers to things that cannot partake of the honor, while the other thinks it is giving to one who needs nothing.
