Scripture, contemplation, and the infinite God
Gregory, the brother of Basil the Great, was chosen as bishop of Nyssa. He endured exile under the emperor Valens, returned to his flock, and took part in the Council of Constantinople in 381, where he defended Orthodox teaching against several rival doctrines.
His writings range from sermons and biblical interpretation to major works on the Trinity, creation, the human person, and the spiritual life. In works such as the Life of Moses he describes growth in holiness as an unending movement into the inexhaustible goodness of God.
