Teacher of the one incarnate Christ
St Cyril became Patriarch of Alexandria in 412 and led the Alexandrian Church during a difficult period of theological and political conflict. He is especially remembered for his opposition to Nestorius, whose teaching appeared to divide Christ too sharply between the divine Word and the man Jesus. Cyril insisted that the one born of the Virgin Mary is the eternal Son of God truly become man. This conviction stood at the center of the Council of Ephesus in 431, which upheld the title Theotokos, “God-bearer,” for the Virgin Mary.
Cyril’s theology emphasizes the real unity of Christ and the saving reality of the Incarnation. Because the Word truly took human nature as his own, Christ’s human life, death, and resurrection are the saving acts of the one divine Son. His biblical commentaries and doctrinal writings became deeply influential in the Christian East. The Orthodox Church honors him as a great hierarch and teacher whose Christology remains central to its confession and worship.
